TEACHING LISTENING SKILL- BASED LESSONS




— GOAL OF TEACHING LISTENING
Teaching listening has been a neglected area. Learners are equally indifferent towards listening.— However listening is a major component in language learning and teaching process.
 The Important Components of Teaching Listening
1  Listener- The listener’s interest in a topic increases his comprehension .
2  The Speaker’s Style 
A.Visual speakers:  notes, diagrams on BB
B Exemplary Speakers:  repeat, stress , summarize
3. Oral Lectures: explicit definition of terms
4. Pre-recorded text: very useful to use such texts of native speakers conversations
3Content : familiar-easy to comprehend
4Visual support : video, pictures, diagrams, gestures, facial expression can help the listener comprehend better.
5Authenticity: authentic language acceptable
Teaching Listening Methods


Mackey has referred , “The suitability of a method to learner depends on :  age, aptitude ,second language level , the size of the group etc.

—Pre-listening Process: (Preparation) Ask questions about their previous knowledge i.e. familiarize the students with what they are going to listen to . Pictures or diagrams can be used

—While-listening Process :(Listen to the Text) The students are expected to take some notes while listening .The teacher may give a list of words they are going to listen

—Post-listening Process: (Aids To Comprehension) ask questions based on listening to test comprehension

—1.1 The Person I am Looking For
: Listen carefully and find out what kind of a person the poet is looking for(Skimming)
—Pick out the pairs of rhyming words from the poem you  listened (Scanning)
—Remember the line/lines of Alliteration from the poem
—1.4 To Be A Somebody, Remain A Nobody : Listen to the text and complete the statements using correct alternatives.(Scanning)
—Tell the names of great personalities you have listened now.
—Can you tell me a couplet/doha of Rahim you have listened.              

Probable Problems
Some Students Can not Concentrate on listening
—Students do not understand the passage clearly

Solutions
—Create interest among the students
—Give stress on purposeful activities
—Arrange listening of rhymes , speeches , songs, jokes
—Make use of audio aids: tape recorders, CDs
—Arrange debates, elocution contests in English,
—Compeering should be in English 
Conclusion
—The most useful thing in learning listening is to let the students listen to spoken English of different varieties and accents better than just the voice of their teacher in order to notice the differences in the speakers’ style , pronunciation, speed etc.
